Is a $375 rod really in the same class as a rod at twice the price?
A rod is a blank, guides, a seat, a grip and a taper. We buy the same classes of all five that the expensive rods do, out of the same kind of factory. What we do not buy is a distributor and a retail shelf.
Our own product page states the comparison directly: the El Jefe v2 is built to rival rods that sell for $700 to $800 and up. We would rather you cast it than take our word for it.
Are you actually a rod maker, or an importer with a logo?
Our rods are built to our specifications in a specialist carbon fiber factory in South Korea, in the same small cluster of factories that produce blanks for brands you already know. The El Jefe v2 comes out of the same factory as our flagship El Rey rods. We design the taper, choose the components and set the build. What we do not do is sell through distributors and retailers, which is the entire reason a comparable rod costs $800+ and ours is $375.
What happens when I break it?
Manufacturing defects are covered at no charge for the original owner, for life. Accidental breakage, which is what usually happens, is covered by a flat published fee per section: $60 on an El Jefe. The warranty does not cover fire, theft, lost sections, intentional breakage or modified rods.
Why the 9 foot 5 weight and not something else?
If you fish trout and you are buying one rod, this is it. Nine feet gives you line control at distance and enough length to mend; the 5 weight handles a dry and still turns over a small streamer. The El Jefe v2 is available from 3 weight through 10 weight if you already know you want something more specialised, and Jeff will talk it through with you on the phone.
Does the combo really save me anything, or is it a bundle trick?
